I read The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri the other day. It was good, about how inescapable the influence of family is; your family is your first impression of the world, and everything else just builds on or edits that, but it's like the initial block of stone of a sculpture; no matter how much is chiseled away or added on, it's still made out of that same block. We're no more than our life experience.

I also found out what classes I'm taking this year. They're not mailing them out until next week, but I stopped by Magnet the other day to pick up a textbook, and I ran into Stefankiewicz and he told me what classes I got into. They are:

AP Euro; Sanservino
AP Lit; Lamey
AP Bio; Green
AP Calc; Marcello
Linguistics; new English teacher
Research Methods; Seigal

I didn't get Comm. Media II. That's kind of a shame, because it's the only real reason I took Comm. Media last year instead of an AP. But whatever.

I intially got put in Gov, but Stefankiewicz said I could switch into Euro if I wanted to. I decided to choose Euro over Gov. Mainly because there's no summer project for Euro, but also people who took both classes last year said Euro was better.

I'm not so sure I want to stay in Research Methods, though. I can switch to Economics & Global Issues, which will be taught by Ms. Roy, but that's about it. And I don't know if I want to take Econ. Part of me kind of does, but on the other hand, it will probably just suck and I'd be better off taking it in college.

Also starting this year, seniors aren't going to have to take finals; instead, we're going to have senior exit projects. This year it will just be tested on twelve to fifteen lucky kids, but starting next year, it'll be for everyone.

Also! I got a free ticket to see Stars/The Decemberists/Death Cab in Central Park this Thursday. Thanks Myspace.

I want to get a job as a waitress somewhere. It's pretty pointless to work in food service and not to get tips. For instance, Starbucks. Fuck Starbucks. I need cash. I need to find a place that doesn't have a liquor license so that they'll hire me while I'm still 17.

The Namesake is one of my favorite books of all time. I met Lahiri last fall and she is one of the nicest people ever, too.

That's so cool. It was a great book. I imagine she'd be nice. It makes sense, her writing is extremely unpretentious and honest. That was the best thing about the book.

wow, how'd you get that ticket? they're so hard to come by, via ebay at least.

some random kid had an extra that he needed to get rid of, and he decided to give it to me. it's a pretty frigging sweet deal.

OMG AP EURO.
I HATED THAT CLASS.
i wanted to die.
my teacher was an actual professor from a college nearby and i tried all i could to get a stupid A in that class and i ended up with a B lmao. :'(

holy AP classes though. phew.
we only have those 4 for AP classes in my school. pretty lame.
but the teacher for AP bio literally doesn't teach the class and as for AP calc..well i'm just not that advanced in math :\

we have finals,
and we have senior projects
and senior interviews
and a portfolio for the past 4 years.
you can tell i'm jumping for joy.
hahaha

and i'm graduating 6/6/06 HAHAHAHA.
i love how my school is the suckiest ever. middle of nowhere 70's high school.

Yeahhh I'm not too stoked for calc. Math isn't really my subject.

My sister loves that book. She is always trying to talk me into reading it but I read so much for school that the last thing I want to do once I'm done with homework is pick up another book..

at least during the school year.

For some reason, this summer I've read more books on my own than I've read in the past year and yet I haven't really even started my summer reading, and I only have two and a half weeks left before school starts. It's some weird backwards way of procrastinating.

You do get tips at Starbucks. They have a little tips jar.

seniors aren't going to have to take finals; instead, we're going to have senior exit projects.

what the fuck... we complained about that for years. literally, i had 2 written finals last year, but still. NOT FAIR.

hmmm
I took AP lit my junior year, it wasn't bad.
I took APEH my senior year, and I loved it, but that was partially because I had an amazing teacher, but I still loved the subject matter. It was tough, but not excessively so.
AT NCSA if you had an A in the class you didn't have to take the final. which I think is probably the fairest way of doing it, if your school doesnt fall prey to grade inflation. which was (mostly) true of the classes I had at NCSA.

yeah, i don't think AP lit will be that bad, even though it is supposedly a lot of reading and writing. but that's what i'm good at. so yeah.

calc is what i'm really worried about, though. my summer work is fucking scary and it's just review. supposedly review. review if you learned it the first time.
